Tribute to Hossam Ali

Tribute to Hossam Ali

While his career was cut tragically short due to his untimely death in the late 1990s, Hossam Ali’s works remain a testament to his forward-thinking style and unique approach to documentary filmmaking. Particularly shorter documentary films: he predicted the onset of the digital format, the influence of video, and even the easily shared internet content that are now ubiquitous: a single shot expressing more sardonic commentary than the exasperating wails of a violin or other sonic “techniques” endemic to documentary film styles in the 1960s and early 1970s. In retrospect, his work can be seen as a kind of ideological and aesthetic bridge from the “new school” of Egyptian documentary filmmakers that came directly before him, such as Khairy Beshara, to the present.

We are happy to present in these two slots a collection of his short films, some of which have not been screened before.
