The Rafla collection is Cimatheque’s biggest acquisition including more than 2,000 film reels, dozens of splicers, projectors, rewinders, slide projector, cameras, and slides. Magdy Rafla was a jeweler by profession and a film collector for leisure, we acquired his collection in April/May 2019 and moved it from Heliopolis neighborhood in Cairo to Cimatheque’s premises by our team. Magdy Rafla’s collection include:

• 1000 9.5mm Pathe Baby films (an exceedingly rare small gauge amateur film format) 

• 1200 16mm print

• (number) Rewinders

• (number) Projectors

• (number) Splicers
  The collection includes many important works showcasing both regional and international cinemas, in addition to orphan films and found footage filmed across different places in Egypt. There are also many international films that are translated into Arabic, giving us a window into the historical world of subtitling and inter-titling films.
