First Cimatheque Screening Programme

Cimatheque Screening Programme

The first general screening programme at Cimatheque - Alternative Film Centre, is one that has been in the works for some time. As a burgeoning space, we struggled with many questions regarding the moving image, its history and our position in trying to support a new generation of cinematic storytellers, ensuring that their voices can be heard in our beloved city.

After numerous starts and stops, endless wrangling about the nature of our still nascent space, the audience, and long discussions about the team - as cinema lovers- would like to see onscreen, we are happy to announce the start of a modest endeavor to bring all the questions on our minds to the fore.

The overall screening program encompasses several approaches, through which it is hoped that a more open and dynamic platform for the movie-going audience can be created. In addition to our own list of internally selected films, we will debut our second collaboration with the French Institute and Zawya , this time featuring a specially curated program from the ACID selection (Association du Cinéma Indépendant pour sa Dittusion/ Association of Independent Cinema for Distribution) of the Cannes Film Festival. We will also embark on the second season of our programme based on archives and Egyptian film history, Revisiting Memory, which will run throughout the Fall months, comprising of talks, workshops, and film screenings. Finally, acknowledging the loss of one of the Egyptian film industry's leading lights, Mohamed Khan, we will organize three tribute screenings every other Friday as of September 23rd, September 30th, and October 7th, featuring special guests and talks to honor his memory.
