Call for application: Intensive workshop (Philosophy of film editing: Understanding what’s beyond the craft) with Film editor and producer Mohamed Samir

About the workshop:
Over the course of 10 lectures (50 hours), this workshop will dig deep in the utilities & functions of film editing. The workshop will take you beyond the craft and will make you reflect and eventually understand the broad meaning of film editing, therefore, expands your understanding of what cinema is.

We believe that anyone can teach you the craft of film editing but not everyone knows how to use this craft to reach the maximum potential of a film/story. This workshop will help you to stand out as a film editor and as a filmmaker in general. It will prepare you to take your film/story to a different level that would be appreciated beyond the craft.

This workshop will help you understand the psychological effect of film editing and as a result of that helps you to be more comfortable to navigate your idea/film with a clear vision and a decisive manner, all of that through discussing diverse ideas such as:
- Editing and its role in building a film’s structure.
- Different film types and genres, in relation to the art of editing.
- Reasons for cutting material out, and selecting the proper sequencing.
- Time & space therefore rhythm
- The relationship between the image and the sound.
- The use of music in a film.
- Why do we cut and when?
- The impact of editing on acting.
- The codes of the inevitable trio, editor, director & producer.
- The role of a producer during the editing phase.
The curriculum of this workshop has been in development for over a decade and has been tested and reviewed through several workshops with many participants from many sides of the filmmaking industry.
8 lectures will be conducted by Mohamed Samir and 2 lectures will be conducted in cooperation with guest lecturers that will enrich the whole experience of the workshop. Names of the guest lecturers will be announced closer to the dates of the workshop.

Who Should apply:
This film editing workshop is crucial for film editors and filmmakers at any stage of their career
- Film producers or interested in being a film producer and wants to gain knowledge about how to work with the writer/director and have a legitimate say in the development of the project, especially in the editing process.
- Filmmakers are in the middle of the development of their project, for example, if you are in the scriptwriting stage of a fiction film or editing stage for documentary film, this workshop will give you the necessary tools to guide yourself and your team through the ambiguity of such stages.
- film critics, writers, actors, film students or even just a cinephile, and anyone who’s interested in understanding how films can be constructed.
